After last night’s UEFA Super Cup, in which Atletico Madrid stuffed Chelsea 4-1, I think it’s safe to say once and for all that the Spanish league is by far and away the best league in the world and is easily superior to the Barclays Premier League.
But rather than making sweeping generalisations let’s look a bit deeper, a few years ago every pundit in the country wouldn’t hesitate to say that the Premier League was the best, but now they’ve all backtracked and are instead saying it’s the most exciting.
Another argument is that our league has the best players in the world, well last time I looked the best three players in the world Messi, Ronaldo and Iniesta, all play in Spain.
Then you have style of football, I watch a lot of both leagues and the general standard in Spain is so much higher, every team top or bottoms play one way pass and move, whereas that just isn’t the case in the Premier League.
Although this season more teams are starting to keep it on the deck more, it’s still miles behind the standard in Spain and managers with outdated philosophies like Sam Allardyce and Tony Pulis simply don’t exist in the Spanish top flight.
I’m not saying I don’t think the Premier League isn’t great, it clearly is but I think like our national side we are still some way behind our Spanish counter parts and we’ve got a long way to go to catch up.
The Premier League is an action movie in the vein of a Die Hard, its fast paced, exciting and makes a lot of money and is great, but is it the greatest no.
