MPs call for payday loan advert ban on children’s TV

A committee of MPs has called for a ban on payday loan advertising on children's television, but the industry regards its report as wide of the mark.

Adverts could expose children to the idea that loans were "fun, easy and an appropriate way to access finance", the Business Select Committee report said.

I think the words “advert”, “on”, “children’s” and “TV” should be removed from the headline so it reads MPs call for payday loan ban, because that’s really what they should be calling for.

This group of MPs should also be calling on banks to lend more, not saying oh payday companies can’t advertise on kids TV, obviously they shouldn’t be allowed to target kids, but they should be asking for so much more than that.

All these payday companies do is allow people who are struggling with their finances to make that struggle harder, it shouldn’t be a question of where they can and can’t advertise it should be a question of when they should be banned and asked to cease trading.
