Motorway middle-lane hoggers to face on-the-spot fines

Motorway tailgaters and middle-lane hoggers are to face quick justice with on-the-spot fixed penalties under new measures announced by the government.

From July, police will be able to issue £100 fines and three points for careless driving offences that would currently have to go to court.

The idea is to target offenders without the need for lengthy court procedures.

Current fixed penalties for using a phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt will also rise by £40 to £100.

These are sensible measures and will hopefully stop people driving like a**holes, but while several driver ‘pet hates’ have been addressed it seems the government has made one glaring omission.

Lorries, when you’re driving on a motorway and you find yourself stuck behind two lorries where one is trying to overtake the other, one is usually doing 60.5 and the one trying to overtake is usually doing 60.51 and it goes on for miles, why has this not been addressed, it’s just as bad as someone cruising in the middle-lane and causing congestion.

There is another little caveat, as you hardly see any police on the motorways will these measures make that much of a difference, or will those that tailgate, lane hog etc. just carry on as normal.
