David Beckham is to retire from
football at the end of this season after an illustrious 20-year career.
The former England captain made 115
appearances for his country and 394 for Manchester United, winning six Premier
League titles and the Champions League.
Beckham, 38, signed a five-month deal at Paris
Saint-Germain in January.
“I’m thankful to PSG for giving me
the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my
career, playing at the highest level,” he said.
Beckham has obviously had a remarkable
career, he has been a fantastic role-model, and has won everything worth winning, club wise,
but he’s been in semi-retirement since he left Real Madrid to join LA Galaxy in
2007.
Beckham has been criticised at times
because his celebrity status overshadowed the game, but that sets him up
perfectly for any sports ambassadorial role so kudos to the Chinese for getting
in their first.
Although we won’t be seeing Beckham
excelling on the football field anymore, we certainly haven’t seen, or heard, the
last from him.
